Halloween Night Hike - Ballinastoe to Djouce

Dare to walk Wicklow’s most haunted forest? Join us this Halloween as daylight fades for a night hike through Ballinastoe Woods to Djouce. Would you walk through Wicklow’s most haunted forest on Halloween night? This Halloween, join Land & Legend Trails for a very different journey through Ballinastoe Woods and onto Djouce Mountain — as daylight disappears and the forest comes alive after dark. We’ll set out in the late afternoon, entering Ballinastoe beneath the forest canopy as the last of the daylight filters through the trees. But this isn’t just a walk through the woods. Ballinastoe has long been associated with ghost stories, strange encounters and tales of things that are said to wander the forest after nightfall. Along the way, we’ll stop to hear some of those stories and explore the folklore and darker legends of the Wicklow Mountains. Leaving the forest behind, we’ll continue towards Djouce as dusk settles over the mountains. Then, as darkness takes over, the headtorches come on and the character of the landscape changes completely. On our return, we’ll descend back towards Ballinastoe in full darkness — when the forest feels very different from the one we entered a few hours earlier. Expect ghosts, ghouls, local legends, mountain folklore and perhaps a few stories best heard in the woods after dark. This is still very much a Land & Legend hike: relaxed, sociable and unrushed, with time to enjoy the landscape and experience the mountains at night. But it is Halloween. And if the old stories are to be believed, there may be worse nights to find yourself walking through Ballinastoe Woods... One extra night. Sunday 1 November. What to expect: • Guided by a qualified Lowland Leader • Approx. 10 km hike • Around 300 m of ascent • Moderate fitness required • Duration: approximately 3 hours • Small group experience • Dusk and night-time mountain views (weather permitting) • Headtorch required (spare available if arranged in advance) Please bring: • Sturdy walking boots or trail shoes with good grip • Waterproof jacket and warm layers • Headtorch with fresh batteries or fully charged • Water and a snack • Suitable clothing for mountain conditions The route and timings may be adjusted if required due to weather or safety considerations.
