Who Needs Anemones?–Film Screening for University of Galway SDG Week 2026

Film screening followed by Q&A with filmmaker Lia Philcox and University of Galway’s Professor Louise Allcock and Dr Anne Marie Power Who Needs Anemones? follows scuba divers from both sides of the Irish border on their journey to becoming citizen scientists. Through SeaSearch Observer training and ongoing survey dives, this growing community of underwater surveyors contributes to the protection of the marine environment by collecting data for biodiversity databases. Filmed in and around Carlingford Lough, a sea inlet on Ireland’s east coast spanning the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, the film explores the divers’ personal stories and their shared passion for diving and “giving something back”. The lough’s colourful and eye-opening marine life is showcased through stunning images taken by the divers themselves. The screening forms part of University of Galway SDG Week 2026 and will take place in the Black Box Auditorium, O’Donoghue Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance. The film has a runtime of 54 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Lia Philcox, Professor Louise Allcock and Dr Anne Marie Power, Zoology, University of Galway. The film is supported by the Shifting Tides Project and the Creative Ireland Climate Action Fund.
