Event description Experience the OPCW’s new exhibition “Chemical Weapons Convention: How we got here and why it matters now more than ever”. Visitors will learn about chemical weapons development, use, and regulation from ancient times until today, including how the international community is working together to completely eliminate chemical weapons, and why OPCW’s work helps to make everyone safer. Visitors are also invited to: • View a demonstration of OPCW inspection techniques, especially those used on non-routine missions and discover how inspectors stay safe in the field. • See the original 2013 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the OPCW. • Learn about internship and career opportunities at the OPCW and find out how you can contribute to international peace and security. • Visit OPCW’s Memorial Garden to honour the victims of chemical weapons. • Join the “Chemistry for Peace” colouring station, where children can express creativity and learn about peaceful uses of science. • Take photos in the OPCW lobby, surrounded by the 193 flags of OPCW’s Member States. About the OPCW As the implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention, the OPCW, with its 193 Member States, oversees the global endeavour to permanently eliminate chemical weapons. Since the Convention’s entry into force in 1997, it is the most successful disarmament treaty, eliminating an entire class of weapons of mass destruction. In 2023, the OPCW verified that all chemical weapons stockpiles declared by the 193 States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention since 1997 — totalling 72,304 metric tonnes of chemical agents — have been irreversibly destroyed under the OPCW’s strict verification regime. For its extensive efforts in eliminating chemical weapons, the OPCW received the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize. For one special Sunday in September, ahead of the International Day of Peace, Just Peace The Hague and more than 20 partners will open their doors to you for a look behind the scenes and to hear the stories of the people and history behind each institution. If you are planning on visiting more organisations during the Just Peace Open Day, make sure to only book one session in a given time slot. Multiple bookings in the same time slot (at one or multiple organisations) made by the same individual will be cancelled.
