More than 25 years later, Aaliyah remains one of the most influential R&B albums of all time. TRACK NOTES: LIL’ KIM — HARD CORE We listen. We pause. We unpack. For the next Track Notes, we’re going back to Brooklyn in 1996 with Lil’ Kim’s debut album, Hard Core. This isn’t just a listening session. We’re sitting with the album and talking about what Lil’ Kim represented then, and what her influence still looks like now. We’ll get into sex, femininity, power, image, fashion, respectability politics, and what it meant for a Black woman in hip-hop to take up this much space unapologetically. How did Hard Core challenge the way women were allowed to talk about sex? Was Kim controlling the image, or was the industry shaping it? Why were male rappers celebrated for the same things women were judged for? And nearly 30 years later, how much of Lil’ Kim do we still see in women in rap today? Released November 12, 1996, Hard Core gave us records like “No Time,” “Queen Bitch,” “Not Tonight,” and “Crush on You,” while helping establish an image and approach to sexuality that would influence generations of women in hip-hop. (Apple Music - Web Player) Come ready to listen, laugh, debate, remember, and probably say, “Wait… run that back.” And yes, you’re leaving with some memorabilia. Explicit content. Grown folks only.
