Suffrage Day celebration with Helen White MP

Suffrage Day marks New Zealand's historic achievement as the first self-governing country in the world to grant women the right to vote in 1893. In 2026, we celebrate the courage of those who fought for this change and reflect on the importance of participation, equality, and democracy in our communities today. And at a time when this equality and participation are being systematically challenged, the legacy of the suffrage movement feels particularly relevant. The right to have a voice, to participate fully in our democracy, and to live free from violence and discrimination are things we should never take for granted.
