The Art of Mizuhiki: Traditional Japanese Knotting

Learn the delicate Japanese craft of Mizuhiki with international artist Kana (Mizuhiki Art Namika). Originating in Ishikawa, Japan, Mizuhiki uses fine paper cords to weave intricate knots that convey deep sentiment and connection. Learn basic knotting techniques to craft your own modern accessory or decorative artwork. About this event This workshop series is an introduction to Mizuhiki, where Kana teaches the evolution of the traditional Japanese knottning technique. Originally made from hemp to protect envelopes against pirates intercepting gifts sent from the continent, this art form has now grown into creating three dimensional decorative objects for your home or as women's accessories. What we will cover: • The Heritage: A brief look at the origins of Mizuhiki and its cultural significance in Japan. • The Technique: Learn the skills of weaving intricate knots out of Japanese Mizuhiki cordes. • The Modern Twist: Integrating contemporary colours and using Mizuhiki for decorative art All workshop materials are provided, including authentic Japanese Mizuhiki cordes. Dates: 12th October 2026 Investment: $65 (includes all materials and refreshments). About the Artist Kana Inami started teaching Mizuhiki since 2010 and founded "Mizuhiki Art Namika" in 2016. Since 2016, Kanaʼs work expanded to overseas, such as Taiwan, Thailand, Dubai, Azerbaidzhan and Italy where she held exhibitions and workshops. Kana was introduced to Mizuhiki, a traditional craft of Ishikawa Prefecture, where she was born and bread. She was drawn to the charm of expressing sentiment through simple knots and colours, a subtle way of expression of Japanese culture. Kanaʼs work goes beyond the previous image of Mizuhiki work and highlights the possibility of modern Mizuhiki expression. She says, "Mizuhiki" is a craft that expresses the hearts of Japanese people.
