Affinity Initiative Aotearoa PGM Workshops | Indoor Lead Course

Kia ora tokou whanau! Top rope is where you start. Lead climbing is where it opens up. 🧗🪢 Learn to Lead is Affinity's two-evening indoor lead climbing course at The Adventure Centre — a structured, beginner-friendly programme designed to take you from top rope to leading your first routes safely and confidently. Lead climbing changes everything. Routes become a puzzle you solve from the ground up, clipping as you go, trusting your movement and your partner in equal measure. It’s the gateway to outdoor sport climbing, multi-pitch, and everything alpine that follows. And it starts here, in a controlled indoor environment with experienced instructors guiding every step. Two evenings. Six hours. One significant skill upgrade. What we’ll cover: 🪢 The fundamentals of lead climbing and how it differs from top rope ⚙️ Rope management and clipping technique 🤝 Lead belaying — catching falls and managing the rope from below ⚠️ Fall practice and understanding fall dynamics 📋 Safety systems, communication, and lead climbing etiquette ✅ Adventure Centre lead verification assessment Course Structure: This is a two-session course — both evenings are required to complete the programme and sit the lead verification assessment. Please only register if you can attend both nights. Session 1: Theory, fundamentals, and initial practice Session 2: Consolidation, fall practice. Who is this for? Open to Affinity members who are comfortable top rope climbing and belaying. You do not need to be a strong climber — confidence on the wall and a willingness to learn is all that’s required. This course is beginner-to-lead focused, not performance focused. What’s included: ✅ Two x 3-hour guided sessions ✅ Instruction from experienced lead climbing instructors ✅ Lead verification assessment at The Adventure Centre (after course) ✅ Gear available for use during the course What to bring: • Climbing shoes and harness (rentals available at The Adventure Centre) • Belay device and locking carabiner • Comfortable, flexible clothing • Water and a light snack • Your questions 💰 $130 per person per course | Affinity members only | Membership is free This event is open to registered Affinity members only. ⁣ This event is for those who identify as Indigenious, Black folks and People-of-Colour (Global Majority). https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfi1_c3e2dI94GPhf5GvpccDpkk2OkL3o3cMlokGY47zWprDg/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=102843650865669075862 We understand that not everyone identifies with the term BIPOC or Global Majority as identities and race intersect is complex. — we use the term broadly to encourage folks to come together to celebrate community & diversity in climbing.⁣
