Begin with a guided introduction to the Kate Sheppard Memorial Walk in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, exploring the story of the white camellia and its enduring connection to New Zealand’s women’s suffrage movement. The white camellia became a powerful symbol of the campaign for women’s voting rights in the late nineteenth century and is closely associated with suffrage leader Kate Sheppard. Supporters of women’s suffrage wore white camellias to show their support, while opponents wore red camellias. When the Electoral Bill was debated in Parliament in 1893, white camellias were reportedly sent to MPs who supported the cause, making the flower an enduring emblem of equality, justice and democratic change. Following the introduction, participants will enjoy a hands-on embroidery workshop led by members of the Canterbury Embroiders' Guild. Using traditional embroidery techniques, you will create your own white camellia textile artwork to take home. All materials required to make one flower will be provided. Additional kits will be available for purchase for those wishing to create extra flowers. Participants are encouraged to bring a pair of small scissors and needles if they have them, although needles will also be available on the day. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with an important chapter in New Zealand’s history while learning new creative skills in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Perfect for beginners and experienced stitchers alike.
