Forest Foods in China

Building Trust Through Standards and Sustainable Production What does it take to ensure forest foods are safe, sustainable and trusted by consumers? Since 2003, China has developed standards to regulate forest foods – edible products harvested from existing forests and under-canopy spaces. But following the withdrawal of its national standard and growing inconsistencies among existing industry standards, questions remain about how best to regulate this diverse and increasingly complex sector. This seminar explores the evolution of forest food standards in China, the challenges of fragmented regulation and potential pathways towards a more coherent and credible framework. It will consider how effective standards can support product quality, market transparency and sustainable forest-based food production.
