Proudly supported by The Piano's Next Generation Fund Venue: The Piano, Armagh Street Registration: $22.50 Festival performer price: $17.50 Erna Ferry is a celebrated jazz and blues singer from the Manawatū, whose musical talents also extend to blues harmonica and Latin American percussion. Born in Germany to a German mother and British father, Erna grew up surrounded by the sounds of jazz. Her mother played Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday “every waking minute of every day,” while her father, a clarinetist, favoured Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. With such a soundtrack to her childhood, it seemed only natural that the “jazz germ” would take hold and remain with her for life. In 1993, Erna won a prestigious jazz competition, bringing her into contact with many of Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading jazz artists. The win also opened the door to remarkable opportunities, including performances as a support artist for Al Jarreau and, later, George Benson. For 20 years, Erna was the house vocalist with the Rodger Fox Big Band, touring extensively throughout New Zealand and internationally. She accompanied the band to the United States on numerous occasions, performing at the Monterey Jazz Festival and playing and recording in Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Seattle, Baltimore and Washington. Her international appearances have also included festivals in New Caledonia. Erna has recorded four albums with the Rodger Fox Big Band and its smaller ensembles, as well as appearing as a guest artist on numerous other recordings. With a voice shaped by a lifetime immersed in jazz and blues, she brings experience, warmth and a deep connection to the music to every performance.
