Tradwives and girlbosses: what can feminism be now?| MindJam - Catalyst Trust

Globally, feminism and the rights of women are under attack. The 2020s have given us the manosphere, looksmaxxing and tradwives, while femininity is being harnessed for political ends. Why are so many women retreating from the feminist cause, and what is the appeal of the tradwife lifestyle for those who adopt it? University of Otago lecturer Dr. Peyton Bond, asks what role does social media play in disseminating anti-feminist lifestyles and rhetoric? “The feminist movement has a long and necessary history, but in this time of distinct anti-feminism – and political rupture – how can feminism respond to our world today?” Dr Peyton Bond teaches across sociology, gender studies and criminology at the University of Otago. Her research is grounded in feminist theory and politics, with particular focus on labour, abolition, relationality, and social reproduction. This event is part of MindJam, a celebration of thinking presented by Catalyst Trust and Otago University's Humanities Division, in Arrowtown this coming Labour Weekend. Discussions will range from how to build a better world to the ‘new’ feminism, ‘teachnology’, AI relationships in literature and life, and the global context of NZ's general election.
