Opera: Ariadne auf Naxos & The Long Christmas Dinner

Paul Hindemiths The Long Christmas Dinner baseras på Thornton Wilders pjäs. The opera students’ final production, in collaboration with the Swedish National Orchestra Academy. Director: Mira Bartov, conductor: Simon Crawford Phillips Richard Strauss’s opera 'Ariadne auf Naxos' is a playful and ingenious blend of opera seria and commedia dell’arte. Seriousness clashes with humour as we follow an opera company preparing to stage a production of Ariadne, who has been abandoned by Theseus on the island of Naxos. With magnificent music, colourful characters and themes of love, change and high versus low culture, 'Ariadne auf Naxos' is a late opera that both moves and surprises. In this production, the students are performing an abridged version of Strauss’s work, focusing on the prologue. Paul Hindemith’s The Long Christmas Dinner is based on Thornton Wilder’s play. Over the course of a single, long Christmas dinner, we follow a family through the generations – from youth and love to ageing, death and new births. Time passes uninterrupted, whilst the Christmas table remains the constant. With warmth, humour and seriousness, the work depicts the cycle of life and the changes that shape a family over time.
