Business Lab: Understanding intellectual property as a strategic tool

This lunch seminar is aimed at researchers who want to better understand how intellectual property (IP) can be approached as a strategic resource. Rather than focusing solely on patents, the session introduces a broader perspective on IP as a set of tools that can support different forms of use, collaboration, and knowledge transfer. You will be introduced to key forms of intellectual property protection and how they relate to research practices, including publication, collaboration, and potential application. Particular attention will be given to how different IP choices can influence, and be influenced by, how you intend your research to be used. During the session, you will: Gain an overview of different forms of intellectual property, including patents, trade secrets, know-how, and trademarks Reflect on when different forms of protection may be relevant in a research context Consider how publication strategies can be balanced with the need to protect certain aspects of your work Explore how intellectual property considerations relate to potential pathways for use and application You are welcome to bring an early-stage idea, an ongoing research project, or an interest in how intellectual property relates to your work.
