The Elsewhere book club - Venus, Vanishing

Elsewhere’s Book club continues! These time we’ll read Rebecca Birrell’s Venus, Vanishing. Berlin, 1928. Hannah Sherman is a young Jewish artist trying to find her place in the restless world of Weimar Berlin. When she is commissioned to paint a series of female nudes, she is drawn into a world of art, desire and shifting identities. But when Hannah discovers that her paintings have been altered and exhibited under a man’s name, the question of who gets to create, own and be remembered becomes impossible to ignore. Set against a city on the brink of profound change, Venus, Vanishing is a story of art, queer love, Jewish identity and the lives that history chooses to remember or erase. This autumn, Elsewhere’s Bookclub explores Who Gets to Tell the Story? through three books about land, identity, art and the stories nations tell about themselves. Meeting monthly from October to December, the bookclub is open to returning and new readers alike. Come for the books, good company and a little literary mischief. If you purchase the book at Elsewhere, we’ll deduct 90 SEK of the ticket price from the price of the book. This is a small thank-you for supporting the shop.
