About Event In October, we’re reading Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk. Part murder mystery, part dark comedy and part philosophical fable, Drive Your Plow takes us to a remote Polish village where local men begin dying in mysterious circumstances. At the centre of it all is Janina Duszejko: an eccentric older woman, amateur astrologer, translator of William Blake and fierce defender of animals. While the authorities search for a human explanation for the deaths, Janina has another theory entirely: perhaps the animals are taking revenge. We chose this one because there is SO much to argue about. Is Janina an unreliable narrator, or a woman dismissed because she refuses to behave as society expects? Why do we accept some forms of violence while condemning others? Is there a point at which moral conviction becomes extremism? And what does the novel have to say about ageing, gender, power and whose lives we consider worth protecting? Come with opinions.
