Making the Past: A Fall Workshop Series

Discover the artistry and traditions of Pennsylvania Dutch culture through this hands-on workshop series at the Sigal Museum. Inspired by the rich folk traditions that have shaped our region for generations, this three-part series invites participants to explore historic crafts while learning about the history, symbolism, and cultural significance of each. Whether you're new to crafting or looking to build on your skills, each workshop offers a welcoming environment for learning traditional techniques and creating a handmade project to take home. Attend individual sessions or join us for the entire series to experience the breadth of Pennsylvania Dutch artistic traditions. Part craft workshop and part history lesson, this series offers a unique opportunity to connect with the people, customs, and creativity that have helped define Pennsylvania Dutch heritage in Northampton County and beyond. Pricing: $25 per workshop (free for active NCHGS Members) All access pass (Admission to all 3 workshops): $70 Held on the first Saturday of each month Capacity: 15 participants per session | Ages: 13+ Hex Sign Painting October 3, 3–5 p.m. | Sigal Museum Explore one of Pennsylvania Dutch culture's most recognizable art forms by learning about the history and symbolism of traditional hex signs. Create and paint your own design while discovering the meanings behind classic motifs such as stars, tulips, hearts, birds, and other folk symbols. Basket Weaving November 7, 3–5 p.m. | Sigal Museum Learn the timeless craft of basket weaving using traditional techniques that have been practiced for generations. Participants will create a functional handmade basket while exploring the role baskets played in everyday life throughout Pennsylvania Dutch communities. Pennsylvania German Cut Paper (Scherenschnitte) December 5, 3–5 p.m. | Sigal Museum Discover the delicate art of Scherenschnitte, the Pennsylvania German tradition of decorative paper cutting. Learn about the history of this folk art before designing and creating your own intricate cut-paper piece inspired by traditional patterns and motifs. All materials will be provided for each workshop.
