From sensational “trauma porn” and confessional recovery memoirs to sweeping geopolitical narratives, this talk explores how a seemingly straightforward public health crisis is framed and manipulated for medical, moral, and political agendas. Together, we’ll consider how these narratives shape public perception, policy, and the lives of people who use drugs, and we’ll imagine alternative ways of telling this story—approaches that foreground dignity, resources, and real support for those affected. Alexis is a doctoral candidate in Emory University’s English department, focusing on addiction, mental health, and disability theory in contemporary American literature. Her research examines the identity-forming, narrative, and political power of addiction and drug use, and how developments in neurobiology and genetics influence cultural and legal understandings of addiction and neurodiversity.
