Olga [screening: Havel 90 Festival]

Miroslav Janek’s intimate portrait reveals Olga Havlová’s sharp wit, quiet strength, and independent spirit through rare archival materials. This screening is part of the Havel 90 Festival Film Marathon, a three-day exploration of Havel’s relationship with cinema within a four-day celebration of his life, art, and legacy. Olga / dir. Miroslav Janek / 2014 / documentary / Czechia / Czech with English subtitles / 87 min. Olga Havlová was far more than the wife of a dissident and, later, president. Independent, unsentimental, and known for her dry humor, she stood beside Václav Havel through surveillance, imprisonment, and political upheaval while forging her own public role and humanitarian legacy. Director Miroslav Janek draws on archival footage, photographs, secret police files, and recollections from friends to create a vivid portrait of Havel’s first wife and closest companion. Rather than presenting a conventional biography, the film allows Olga’s character to emerge through gestures, glances, and memories: candid, skeptical, generous, and fiercely self-possessed. The result is at once a love story, a record of dissent, and a tribute to a woman who remained unmistakably herself as history transformed the world around her. Havel 90 Festival is organized by the Czech Center New York and the Vaclav Havel Center, with support from the Bohemian Benevolent & Literary Association .
