Building Blocks of Musical Improv: Intro to Music, Games, and Songs!

Learn the building blocks of musical improv in one simple three hour workshop! About this workshop: Over the course of this three hour workshop, you will explore various elements of musical improv. It may seem intimidating, but we promise it is easier than you think! First, you will learn how to be more comfortable singing on the spot in front of others. Next, you will explore short-form musical improv games and the skills that make them pop. Finally, you will create improvised verses and choruses as part of a long-form musical improv format. ​What is Musical Improv? ​Musical improv is like a game where you and your friends make up songs right on the spot. You don’t need any prepared lyrics or music; instead, you create them as you go. It’s a mix of acting and singing, where everyone collaborates to create fun and surprising songs that fit the moment. ​It might sound tricky, but with the right mindset, simple guidelines, and a bit of practice, it’s easier than it looks. Think of it like creating a first draft—using patterns like adding a chorus and taking turns helps you shape your spontaneous songs. ​This event is free, and any donations will go towards Baltimore Musical Improv (a fiscally sponsored non-profit organization)!​ ​Who Should Attend? ​This workshop welcomes all writers, improvisers, songwriters, and musical theater enthusiasts—whether you’re into musical theater, pop, rock, folk, or any other genre.
