Cine Club - Habemus Papam by Nanni Moretti

Explore the rich world of Italian cinema as we screen and discuss some of the most iconic and thought-provoking films from Italy. Discover Italy through its cinema—not only a screening, also a conversation: teacher Barbara guides a discussion that brings the movie, its cultural context, and Italy to life. Join us for an Italian cinema evening at our next Cine Club meeting on Friday, November 20! We’ll be screening Habemus Papam (We Have a Pope), a 2011 comedy-drama directed by Nanni Moretti and starring Michel Piccoli and Moretti himself. The film takes us behind the walls of the Vatican, where the conclave has just elected a new pope. But just as he is about to step onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica and greet the waiting crowd, the newly elected Cardinal Melville is overcome by panic and finds himself unable to face his new role. Concerned by the unexpected crisis, the cardinals call in a psychoanalyst, played by Nanni Moretti, to help him. What follows is a witty, touching, and deeply human story about fear, responsibility, self-doubt, and the enormous weight of other people’s expectations. Come for a cinematic journey that captures the fragile beauty of childhood alongside the harsh truths of society, enriched by a discussion with teacher Barbara designed to deepen your understanding of the film, its cultural references, and Italy’s complex social fabric. The movie will be screened in Italian with English subtitles, making it accessible for all levels of language proficiency.
