Between Southbound's two festival weekends, IACP presents Southbound Story & Conversation Hour—five evenings of cocktails, conversation, and unforgettable stories from some of the South's most compelling food voices. Join us Monday–Friday in special Birmingham settings for one remarkable storyteller each evening. They'll share a story, then open the conversation. No panels. No PowerPoints. Just a drink, a great story, and a chance to hear—and talk with—people who have something wonderful to share. About Sephira Bailey Shuttlesworth Sephira Bailey Shuttlesworth is a co-author of The Passions of Our Culture and a former elementary school principal with more than 30 years of experience. In 1966, Sephira, along with two of her siblings, integrated the county school system. While still in high school, she enrolled at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in less than three years. In 1986, she met civil rights icon Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, and the two remained friends for over 20 years before marrying in a candle-lit ceremony at the church he founded in Cincinnati, Ohio. The couple returned to Birmingham, Alabama, after her husband suffered a stroke in the fall of 2007, remaining there until his death. In her current role, she is dedicated to preserving his legacy as one of the three giants of the civil rights movement, alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Reverend Ralph Abernathy.
