Join BCSWCD for a hands-on Women for the Land forestry workshop designed to build confidence and practical skills for caring for your woods. Whether you own a few wooded acres, manage a larger forested property, or simply want to become more comfortable using forestry equipment, this workshop will give you an opportunity to learn by doing in a supportive, women-focused environment. 🌳 What We'll Learn We'll be joined by Amy Spalding with The Nature Conservancy and Allie Cline with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources for demonstrations and hands-on instruction covering: • Forestry tools and equipment — Learn what different tools and machines are used for and how to safely and effectively use them in the woods. • Forest management techniques — Build practical knowledge that you can take back to your own property. • Invasive species treatment — Learn how land managers properly mix and apply treatments for invasive plants. • Mixing and measuring — Practice the process of accurately measuring and mixing a treatment solution. • Safety and responsible use — Discuss proper handling, equipment, personal protective equipment, and considerations when treating invasive species. 💧 Don't Worry — No Chemicals Will Be Used! This workshop will include instruction on properly mixing chemicals used for invasive species management, but no herbicides or other chemicals will be used during the workshop. Instead, we'll practice the mixing process using colored water so participants can learn the techniques in a hands-on setting without handling actual chemical products. 👩🌾 Come Ready to Learn & Get Hands-On This isn't a sit-and-listen workshop! We'll spend time learning from experienced forestry professionals, seeing equipment in action, asking questions, and practicing techniques. No previous forestry experience is required. Come with questions, curiosity, and a willingness to get a little dirty! 🥣 Pitch-In Lunch A pitch-in lunch will be provided! Attendees are welcome to bring a dish or something to share if they'd like. Organizers will provide a variety of soups, including gluten-free and vegan options, so everyone should have something to enjoy. What else to Bring • Comfortable outdoor clothing appropriate for the weather • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots • Work gloves, if you have them • Water bottle • Questions about your own woods or invasive species challenges Space is limited, so please register in advance. We look forward to spending the day in the woods with you!
