While jewelry, hair and other fashion evolves, love of draped garments has stayed relatively consistent. In this class we’ll learn hands on how to drape two of the most popular styles of draped garments - a fishtail and the nivi wrap. There will be draping instructions for all genders/gender identities, and a lot of practical information for how to be functional and look good doing it. We’ll also run through an overview of some of the art in this region that shows these drapes and take a look at some of the fabrics that are most likely to be seen on historic people wearing these drapes. Please wear clothing that is close fitting enough to put layers on top of - leggings, shorts, etc, and any upper body clothing you feel comfortable in. If you have a sari you’ve been dying to try on, bring it on by, but the instructor will also have loaner items. 3-4: English Country Dance, with Justin du Coeur The English Dancing Master, by John Playford in 1651, popularized a social dance style that is still done today, and which led to modern Scottish Country and Contra dance. Come learn a few dances from that first book, taught in the modern gender-free Larks and Robins style. No experience required, just enthusiasm to get up and learn some not-terribly-hard dances! Justin runs the local monthly SCA dance practice, which is open to all -- for more details, see https://carolingia.eastkingdom.org/arts-and-science-recreations/dance/ Music provided by the Waytes of Carolingia, our local dance band! 4-5: SCA Open House! So come meet some folks from the club, see some more of these activities, and have a chance to ask questions. 5-6: Historical Shortstaff, with Tom Courtney A simple routine to introduce Renaissance short staff technique, taken from a manuscript by Paulus Hector Mair.
