Engineering for Kids with FabMaker Studio-Session 9: Storybook Engineers

Using the FabMaker online software platform, created and overseen by FableVision/Reynolds Center TLC, participants combine creativity, storytelling, engineering, and computational thinking to design and build unique projects that come to life through making. Each workshop encourages students to explore the engineering design process while developing collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills. Participants leave with a completed take-home project and the confidence to continue creating long after the workshop ends. Register for each workshop separately. For kids ages 7-12-ish. $35/per session. Each session is 90 minutes. Workshops (Register separately for each) 8/1 FabMaker Foundations -Introduce students to the FabMaker platform through fun design challenges while learning the basics of digital creation and engineering. Students create a 3D Paper Sculpture to take home. 8/8 Paper Engineering Lab: Discover the mechanics behind pop-up books and folded paper structures. Students design and construct an interactive Pop-Up Creation using engineering and artistic design. 8/15 Balloon Car Builders: Explore forces, motion, and engineering by designing, building, and testing balloon-powered vehicles. Students race home with their own Balloon-Powered Racing Vehicle. 8/22 Build a Better Playground: Young engineers identify community needs and design an innovative playground that is fun, inclusive, and safe. Students build a Playground Prototype. 8/29 Back to School Design Challenge: In this hands-on FabMaker workshop, students become designers as they create a personalized project that represents their interests, goals, and dreams for the new school year. 9/19 Dot Day Makers: Make Your Mark! Celebrate creativity, courage, and innovation with this hands-on FabMaker workshop inspired by The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. Students discover that every great idea starts with a single mark as they explore creativity through engineering, design, and making a personalized Dot Art Sculpture or Interactive Dot Creation 9/26 Light Lantern: As they build, students practice the engineering design process by planning, testing, improving, and personalizing their creations. Each student leaves with a glowing Light Lantern to display at home. 10/3 Mystery Monsters: Students become digital designers and create their own unique 3D creatures. Students combine shapes, weld pieces together, morph designs, and add features such as wings, tails, ears, and legs before printing and constructing their monsters. 10/17 Storybook Engineers: Combine literacy and engineering by creating an interactive story scene that uses moving parts, pop-ups, and creative design. Students take home an Interactive Story Scene. 10/24 Cardboard Arcade: Inspired by the maker movement, students design, build, and test their own cardboard arcade games while learning engineering and design principles. Each participant leaves with a Playable Arcade Game.
