Punks and Rabbis: Rav Kook and the Souls of Chaos

Early 20th-century Israel was a wild scene. The 2nd Aliyah brought young idealists from Russia and Eastern Europe, escaping persecution but also intoxicated with radical ideas of what their new home could and should be. A clash between these new-world athiest punks and the old-world haredi establishment was inevitable, with the future at stake. Rabbi Avraham Yitzhak haKohen Kook was one of the few people with the faith and vision that saw those two worlds operating in tandem. His essay “Souls of the World of Chaos” expressed that vision in stormy, cosmic terms, shedding light not only on that instance but on any instance in which traditional and radical cultures clash.
