Early 20th-century Israel was a wild scene. The 2nd Aliyah brought young idealists from Russia and Eastern Europe, escaping persecution but also intoxicated with radical ideas of what their new home could and should be. A clash between these new-world athiest punks and the old-world haredi establishment was inevitable, with the future at stake. So many early American punks were Jewish - The Ramones, The Dictators, Richard Hell, Lou Reed, and on and on. What set these “souls of the world of chaos” off? In what ways did they reflect the powerful patterns outlined in Rav Kook’s Essay on souls of chaos? What is the nature of the world they were trying to build? Is it still possible?
