Focus Engineering has long been guided by ethical principles rooted in public safety, professional integrity, and the responsible application of knowledge. This presentation explores the evolution of engineering ethics—from its early foundations in professional codes of conduct to the increasingly complex challenges faced by today’s engineers. We will discuss the rise of artificial intelligence, which presents both powerful tools and profound dilemmas. As AI technologies become embedded in infrastructure design, transportation systems, and predictive maintenance, engineers must wrestle with new questions: Who is accountable for machine-made decisions? How do we mitigate algorithmic bias? What ethical obligations do engineers have in protecting data privacy and ensuring transparency in automated systems? Lecture 2: Trenchless Installation – Jacking/Tunneling A rapidly growing segment of pipe projects include trenchless technology. Jacking projects are less disruptive to traffic, communities, utilities and businesses. Trenchless installation saves time, saves money, and improves roadway safety. Understanding this construction process can provide valuable insight into the trenchless process, and how it can be used not only for new construction but also as a replacement of failing culverts. As our nation’s infrastructure approaches the end its service life, jacking procedures are a valuable option worth considering. Course Instructor: Trygve W.
