UVA Infrastructure Month: Tour the Energy Plant of the Future

Tour UVA's fossil fuel-free Fontaine Energy Plant and see how geoexchange powers the next generation of heating and cooling. As part of UVA Infrastructure Month and Campus Sustainability Month, join us for an exclusive tour of the Fontaine Central Energy Plant, one of the first zero-combustion, fossil fuel-free district energy plants in North America. Completed in spring 2026, this innovative facility uses 100 geoexchange wells, thermal storage tanks, and ultra-efficient heat pumps to provide heating and cooling for the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology and future development at Fontaine Research Park. Participants will get a firsthand look at how this groundbreaking system works and learn how UVA is reimagining campus energy infrastructure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while supporting future growth. This is a unique opportunity to explore the technology, engineering, and sustainability strategies behind one of the University's most ambitious infrastructure projects. Transportation and a sweet treat will be provided. Date & Time: Thursday, October 15, 3:00-4:15 p.m. Meeting Location: UVA Chapel, west side of McCormick Road Capacity: Limited to 30 participants Safety Requirements For your safety, participants must wear: • Long pants • Closed-toe, flat shoes (no flip-flops, sandals, or high heels) Participants who do not meet these requirements may not be permitted to enter the facility. This event is free and open to students, staff, faculty and interested community members. Photos and short video clips will be taken at this event.
