Full description from organizerShow less
Join the Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs' Equality Development and Globalization Studies (EDGS) program for a public talk by Tati Lathipatud Durriyah, Associate Professor and Head of the MA in Education program at the Indonesian International Islamic University (UIII) and current Buffett-EDGS Visiting Scholar. Generative AI now often produces a draft before a learner has written a word. What does it mean to teach authorship under those conditions? In this talk, Prof. Durriyah draws on the learning sciences tradition of “making,” or learning through the construction of artifacts. She argues that critical AI literacy develops through the work of correcting what the tool produces. Durriyah’s analysis centers on a master’s course in which educators from Indonesia, Afghanistan, Uganda and the Gambia used AI to create bilingual picturebooks for the children they teach. Along the way, they documented what they had to correct. She contends that critical capacity toward generative AI comes from this labor of correction, and that the labor becomes teachable when students are required to record it. Grounded in Global South classrooms, the talk also questions a common assumption in current debates: that human-centered AI is necessarily equity-centered AI. Doors will open at 12:00 p.m., and lunch will begin at 12:15 p.m. Please note that 720 University Place is not an ADA-accessible space. Increasing physical access to buildings and facilities is a goal of the University, but not all buildings and venues have been updated.
