Sanders and Mary Clare McHugh Sanders Endowed Professorship Annual Lecture - Aid to the Unemployed Before Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deals With Prof. Tom Krainz Wednesday, September 30 4:00 pm JTR 103 The talk will explore how communities in the American West provided assistance to unemployed laborers before widespread federal aid. During economic downturns, local governments and organizations rapidly expanded welfare programs to sustain residents. Scholars have largely overlooked this activity when examining the development of America's welfare policies and practices. These temporary local measures were, in fact, key elements in the nation's welfare development.
