Queer Nature Sunset Hike

Come learn about queerness in nature on our guided hike and enjoy a sunset view from the peak at the end! What to expect: Come celebrate LGBTQ+ history month with us! Join our guided nature hike, centered around queerness in nature, from jack-and-jill-in-the-pulpits and fungi to slugs and salamanders! We’ll finish our walk with a sunset view on the peak. This program is intended for queer people and allies. The full program lasts 2 hours. Please wear close-toed shoes and long pants for our time on the trail. Program leaders: Your guides will be Ranger Karsten Bobb, a DeKalb County Park Ranger at Arabia Mountain, and Ranger Eliza Crofts, an Arabia Alliance Roving Ranger. Where to meet: Meet us inside the Nature Center (3787 Klondike Rd.). What to bring: Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and outdoor hiking shoes. Please bring your own water and any snacks you might need to stay energized and hydrated throughout the program. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for sun protection, as well as insect repellent to keep the bugs at bay. Restrooms: Public restrooms are available in front of the Nature Center. You will look for a brown building with red doors. Recommended ages: This program content is designed for 12+. Dogs: Dogs are welcome! Weather contingency: This program will be held rain or shine unless conditions are deemed unsafe by DeKalb County Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs (RPCA). Walking distance: Varies based on pace of the group but likely 3 miles. Exposure: This walk is mostly under shaded tree canopy, but we will be finishing on the exposed peak. Trail surface & accessibility: This program stays on established soft trails of mixed terrain. There are sections of the walk that are quite steep and also have exposed roots.
