Full description from organizer

An act of dignity. A mitzvah of care. A sacred responsibility shared by community. What does it mean to care for someone after death? In Jewish tradition, tahara is the sacred ritual preparation of a deceased person for burial. Performed by members of a chevra kadisha (holy society), this mitzvah is a profound expression of kavod hamet—honoring the dignity of the deceased. Join Rabbi Jamie Arnold and Devora Yellin, JADE Death Educator, for a hands-on tahara training exploring the traditions, practices, and responsibilities of this sacred Jewish work. Together, we will learn about the purpose and meaning of tahara, the Jewish customs and principles that guide the ritual, and the practical steps involved in preparing a body for burial. Through instruction and hands-on practice, participants will have an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the ritual and the care, respect, and teamwork it requires. Tahara is a mitzvah performed without expectation of recognition or reciprocity. It asks us to set aside our own needs and offer care to another person at their most vulnerable. It is an opportunity to serve our community in a deeply meaningful way, honoring the dignity of every human being through death and burial. This training is for those interested in learning more about tahara, exploring participation in a chevra kadisha, or deepening their understanding of Jewish burial practices. Come ready to learn, ask questions, and engage with this sacred responsibility.
