Intro to Blacksmithing

Learn the fundamentals of blacksmithing in this intro workshop at MASS with Ryan Stoddard. Intro to Blacksmithing • How to safely handle the core blacksmithing tools: hammers, tongs, punches, and vise • How the gas forge works and how to safely move, heat, and shape hot steel • Basic hammering technique and anvil fundamentals • The basics of grinding on a 2x72 belt grinder • Why steel is hardened and tempered in knife heat treatment By the end of class, you'll forge and grind your own simple hand-forged piece to take home! IMPORTANT - Waivers must be signed before start of class! Please sign the waiver here. 🦺 Safety & Dress Code (Required) For your safety, proper attire is mandatory: • Long pants • Sturdy closed-toe shoes • Clothing that fits securely and doesn't hang loose around machinery Heavy apron is recommended but not required Be sure to bring a water bottle so you stay hydrated during the class.
