Wednesdays in Jersey City Jersey Creative Lab’s six-week Intro to Improv Comedy workshop is built for adults who want to loosen up, get more comfortable thinking on their feet, and meet new people in a fun, low-pressure setting. By the end of the six weeks, you’ll have a strong foundation in the basics of improv comedy, including scene and character building. You will also feel more comfortable speaking up, thinking on your feet, and trusting yourself in social and professional situations - all without ever feeling like you’re “performing.” No homework, no memorizing lines, no pressure. This isn’t theater school. It’s improv as a playful, social, presence-building, after-work experience. Whether you’re new to town, craving a creative outlet, or simply looking for something more meaningful than another midweek happy hour, this workshop offers a structured, supportive way to connect and grow. Enrollment is capped at 16 participants. Logistics 📍 Location: JC Writer's Loft (157B 1st Street, Jersey City, NJ) 🗓 Dates: 11/4, 11/11, 11/18, 12/2, 12/9 12/16 (no class Thanksgiving week) ⏰ Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM 👥 Max 16 participants Advance registration required. What to expect A welcoming, inclusive environment Short-form and long-form improv games and exercises Laughter, movement, and creativity You’ll build confidence and presence without even realizing it A low-pressure experience - no homework, memorizing lines, or showcases Optional post-workshop social hour after the 6th class Who it’s for Complete beginners - no experience required Anyone looking to laugh, decompress, and connect with others People who want to get out of their head and be more present in the moment Those craving a midweek reset that isn’t another happy hour Adults curious about improv comedy, creativity, or trying something new Actors, comedians or other performers looking to sharpen their instincts and stay playful About the Instructor This workshop is led by Nick Carrillo, an actor and improv comedy instructor who has been teaching and performing improv, sketch, and theater throughout New York City for several years. Nick has trained/performed/taught with UCB, The PIT, and The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute, and was an original cast member of the Off-Broadway hit Puffs; Or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic. In addition to his stage work, Nick has appeared in commercials and has been featured on NBC, VH1, Comedy Central, and truTV. He also works with Marvel, hosting digital video content and appearing on The Official Marvel Podcast. As an instructor, Nick focuses on creating a supportive, low-pressure environment where students can have fun, take risks, and build confidence while learning the fundamentals of improv comedy. Fun fact: Nick has performed improv with Goosebumps author R.L. Stine...twice! Feedback From Past Students 5.0 / 5 average rating from our last cohorts “My favorite part about the class was seeing the growth in myself and my classmates, and how we all went from unsure and shy to much more bold and confident as the classes went on.” “Nick was so welcoming and encouraging, pulled us out of our comfort zone but not in a scary way.” “It's so nice meeting people while also not really meeting them in relationship to the ‘normal’ way you meet someone (work or through a mutual friend). Getting to know so many different kinds of people was so nice.” “Nick was an amazing teacher. The group was filled with talented people who I can call new friends.” “This class really helped me think on my feet more and be more comfortable performing in front of people. Even simple things like maintaining eye contact got a lot easier.” Looking Ahead For those who want to keep going, we are offering a 6-week Level 2 From Practice to Performance workshop that ends with a live showcase. We are continuously building out our improv program to offer advanced workshops focused on deeper scene work and ensemble development that will eventually qualify students to be part of of Jersey Creative Lab's house team. More details will be shared with current students. Policies & Notes Enrollment is limited and advance registration is required. Refunds are available up to 30 days before the first session, minus a $25 administrative fee. After that, refunds are not available. Registrations may be transferred to another person by emailing [email protected].
