CXU Gallery is pleased to present “Memory Lag,” a solo exhibition by Jung Yeon Bae, on view October 17 through October 31, 2026. The exhibition explores the relationship between memory, travel, time, and emotion, considering the ways experiences can remain with us long after the moment itself has passed. “Memory Lag” takes its title from the artist’s reflection on the delayed arrival of memory and emotion. Bae describes memories as experiences that do not always “arrive on time,” sometimes returning long after the event has ended. Inspired particularly by her experiences of travel, the exhibition considers the space between experiencing a place and later understanding its emotional significance. Through color and texture, Bae transforms fleeting impressions into fragments that can be revisited. From the wildflowers waving in the green field, the yellow bench underneath the massive tree, her works capture moments that may initially seem distant or unresolved, allowing them to reemerge with a different emotional weight. For Bae, memory follows its own rhythm, sometimes requiring time before its significance becomes fully understood. “Memory Lag” invites viewers to reflect on their own relationship with memory - the places, sensations, and experiences that continue to surface long after they have seemingly passed. In Bae’s work, distance becomes a space for reflection, where longing, beauty, and understanding gradually catch up with the present. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Bae received her BFA from Ewha Woman’s University. She later earned a MA in Studio Art from California State University, Sacramento. Bae taught art at the college level in Seoul for five years and has since exhibited extensively in South Korea and California, as well as internationally. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Irvine Fine Arts Center, the Contemporary Art Fair in Zurich, the Newport Beach Art Exhibition, the Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles, the Seoul Modern Art Show, and the LA Art Show. “Memory Lag” will be on view at CXU Gallery from October 17 through October 31, 2026, with an opening reception on Saturday, October 17, from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 11:00 am- 5:00pm and Saturday, 10:00am-1:00pm. Admission is free.
