Student Matinee Join us after Thursday's matinee performance for a talk back with show creator and performer Andy Millard, exploring the world of Charles Dickens. This is a perfect outting for homeschoolers, students, and literature-lovers of all ages. About Andy When Polk County High School first opened its doors to students in August of 1992, a young Andy Millard was there to greet them as their principal. A career educator, he had moved to Tryon from Belmont, NC with his wife Sharon and 3-year-old son Drew a few weeks earlier to take on the challenge of opening a brand-new, newly-consolidated high school in the most beautiful setting imaginable. Students, many of them in their 50s now, still recount the first pep rally, where their new principal shocked everyone by stripping down to long johns dyed PCHS blue to what it meant to he “True Blue Through and Through.” Even though he would eventually leave the school system and start several local businesses, that first year kindled a deep love for our unique community. That love has taken many forms in the ensuing 34 years: emceeing annual events such as the Any & All Dog Show, TDDA Halloween Costume contest, and Tryon Midnight New Year’s Eve street party; flipping pancakes with the Kiwanis Club of Tryon; putting in eight years as chair of the Blue Ridge BBQ Festival; countless volunteer hours at various events; and yes, theater. After obtaining his theater training at Presbyterian College (BA) and Wake Forest University (MA), and then teaching theater in the Gaston County Public Schools, Andy set aside that passion to pursue a business career. Catherine Gillet and Michelle Newman of Shakespeare & Friends eventually invited him to jump back in, which he did with relish. He has played roles in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Light in the Piazza, Enchanted April, Hamlet Requiem, and of course A Christmas Carol. He has directed The Tempest as well as Arms and the Man, both in Rogers Park. In the years since that first day at Polk County High, the hair has grown thinner and grayer, the shoulders a bit more stooped. But the energy, passion and drive glow as brightly as ever. For this version of A Christmas Carol, Andy developed the script and plays all 30 roles.
