Full description from organizerShow less
John Nolan will share artifacts that survived the 1800s, and what they tell us about the people who owned them. Greenville spent the 1800s growing from a courthouse village on the Reedy River into a market and mill town. Most of what its people made, bought, and used is long gone. Some of it survived. Historian John Nolan walks through artifacts from Greenville’s nineteenth century and asks what they reveal. Who made these objects? Who owned them? And what do the things a town leaves behind tell us about how it lived, worked, and changed? About the talk The talk runs about 45 minutes, followed by questions. About the speaker John Nolan founded Greenville History Tours in 2006. For twenty years he has led residents and visitors through the city’s historic and cultural sites. He is the author of A Guide to Historic Greenville, South Carolina (The History Press, 2008). He served for twenty years as curator of the Bob Jones University Museum & Gallery and now teaches in BJU’s Division of Art + Design. VisitGreenvilleSC named him its first Gold Star Ambassador.
