Bowl Turning 101 w/ Traditional Tools

Most of our turning classes use easy-to-learn carbide-tipped tools — and they're great for getting started. This class is different. Here, you'll learn to turn a wooden bowl using traditional high speed steel (HSS) tools — the same type of turning tools that professional and experienced woodturners have relied on for decades. Why Traditional HSS Tools? Carbide tools are forgiving and beginner-friendly, but HSS tools give you something carbide can't: complete control over the cut. With a properly sharpened HSS gouge in your hands, you can make cleaner, smoother cuts that require less sanding, shape more complex profiles, and respond to the wood in real time. HSS tools are also re-sharpenable — a single gouge can last a lifetime with proper care. Learning to turn with HSS is what takes bowl turning from a fun hobby to a true craft. What You'll Learn: In this dedicated bowl turning class, our instructors will walk you through the full process from blank to finished bowl, with a focus on building proper HSS technique: • Tool fundamentals — Understanding the bowl gouge, its bevel, flute orientation, and how the geometry of the tool affects the cut • Sharpening basics — How to get and maintain a sharp edge on HSS tools, because a dull tool is the enemy of a good bowl • Mounting the blank — How to safely secure your bowl blank to the lathe using a faceplate or chuck • Shaping the outside — Turning the exterior profile of your bowl, learning to ride the bevel and control the cut direction • Hollowing the inside — The most rewarding (and challenging) part — removing material from the interior while maintaining even wall thickness • Sanding and finishing — Taking your bowl from rough-turned to smooth and sealed, ready for display or everyday use By the end of class, you'll walk out with a finished wooden bowl you shaped with your own hands — and a real understanding of how traditional turning tools work so you can keep developing your skills at home. Who Is This Class For? This class works for all skill levels. If you're brand new to turning, you'll get a solid foundation in the tools that serious turners use. If you've taken one of our other classes using carbide tools, this is a great next step to deepen your skills and expand what you can do on the lathe.
