Cabinetry 101: build a Shaker-style door using rail & stile router bits and a floating panel. All skill levels, all materials provided. Cabinetry Workshop: Building Custom Cabinet Doors If you've ever looked at a kitchen and wondered how those cabinet doors are made, this is the class that shows you. You'll learn the fundamentals of frame-and-panel door construction and build a small Shaker-style cabinet door from maple on the router table — taking it home as both a finished piece and a reference for building more at home. Cabinet doors look complicated, but the construction method is surprisingly straightforward once you understand how the parts work together. A frame-and-panel door is made from just five pieces: two vertical stiles, two horizontal rails, and a center panel that floats inside the frame. That floating panel is the key — it allows the wood to expand and contract with humidity changes without cracking the door or popping the joints. Understanding why it works this way is just as important as knowing how to cut it. What You'll Learn: • Rails vs. stiles — The difference between the two frame pieces, why they're cut differently, and how they go together. This is the vocabulary of cabinetmaking, and once you know it, plans and tutorials start making a lot more sense. • Door profile router bits — How rail-and-stile router bit sets work, how the two matched profiles interlock to create a strong joint with a built-in groove for the panel, and how to set them up on the router table • Using the Rockler Rail Coping Sled — A purpose-built sled that holds the rail securely while you rout the cope cut (the end-grain profile on the short pieces), giving you a clean, safe, consistent cut every time • Cutting the floating panel — How to size and shape the center panel so it fits the groove in the frame with room to move, and why "floating" matters for long-term durability • Assembly and glue-up — Fitting the rails, stiles, and panel together, checking for square, and clamping the door so it dries flat and true • Sanding and finishing — Cleaning up any squeeze-out and bringing the door to a smooth, finished surface Why Shaker Style? Shaker doors are the most popular cabinet door style for good reason — clean lines, no fussy ornamentation, and a look that works in kitchens from farmhouse to modern. They're also the best door to learn on because the construction is pure frame-and-panel without any added complexity. Once you can build a Shaker door, you can build any raised-panel or profiled variation by swapping out the router bits. What You'll Take Home: A finished Shaker-style maple cabinet door — plus the knowledge to build full-sized doors for your own kitchen, bathroom, or built-in projects at home. No woodworking experience needed. Our instructors will guide you through every step.
