Make a Bandsaw Reindeer

Build a 3D reindeer from a single piece of hardwood using compound bandsaw cuts. No experience needed, all materials provided! Make a Bandsaw Reindeer This isn't a flat cutout or a silhouette. In this class, you'll build a three-dimensional wooden reindeer sculpture using a bandsaw technique called compound cutting — and the finished piece looks like it was carved by hand. Compound cutting is one of the bandsaw's best tricks. You cut a profile from one side of a solid block of wood, tape the scrap back on, rotate the block 90 degrees, and cut a second profile from the adjacent face. When the tape comes off, you're holding a fully three-dimensional shape — a standing reindeer with a head, body, legs, and antlers, all from a single piece of hardwood. What You'll Learn: • Template layout — Tracing the side and front profiles onto the blank so your cuts line up correctly from both directions • Drilling for detail — Using Forstner bits to drill the holes that form the space between the antlers and between the legs, saving time and producing cleaner shapes • Compound cutting on the bandsaw — Making the first series of profile cuts, taping the waste back on, rotating the blank, and making the second series to reveal the 3D shape • Sanding and finishing — Smoothing the contours with drum sanders and hand sanding, then applying a finish that brings out the wood grain What You'll Take Home: A freestanding 3D wooden reindeer sculpture, roughly 7-1/2" tall, cut from a single block of hardwood.
