Saturday at the Garden: Fall Harvest Event

Join us at the Urban Garden Center to learn how to start your Spring garden! General admission is free and runs from 9:00 - 11:30 am. • PLANT SALE | 9:00 - 11:30 AM : Plants for sale include grafted fruit trees, succulent dishes, herbs, ti plants, and more. Cash or credit card using your cell phone will be accepted. • PUMPKIN PAINTING (while supplies last): Fun activity for youth and adults. • ASK THE EXPERTS | 9:00 - 11:00 AM : Question and answer table for tropical and subtropical fruits. See the display of tropical and subtropical fruits grown in Hawaii. Pick up Fruit Hui handouts with fruit information. • TREE GRAFTING - TALK & DEMO | 9:00 - 11:30 am: Mark Suiso will give an overview and tips on how to graft, air-layer, and care for trees. • SOIL PAINTING | 9:00 - 11:30 am: Hawaii Agricultural Research Center will have fun youth and family activities. • WATERWISE HOME IDEA GARDEN TOURS: On-going tours of a beautifully landscaped xeric garden. • MG GARDEN OPEN HOUSE | 10:30 - 11:30 am: View the raised bed gardens and talk with Master Gardeners for gardening advice. • OʻAHU INVASIVE SPECIES COMMITTEE: Learn about the top invasive species on Oʻahu. Little Fire Ant (LFA) delivers a painful sting and can cause blindness in pets. Look for small, rust-colored ants that bite. Catching them early is key! Information will be available about other invasive species such as CRB. • HAWAIʻI ANT LAB: Learn how the Hawaiʻi Ant Lab staff can help you to manage Little Fire Ant (LFA) infestations in residential neighborhoods. Stop the ant! Workshops and Tours: ticket include general admission activities. • GROWING COOL SEASON VEGETABLES | 9:00 - 10:30 AM (free, walk-up): As temperatures begin to decrease in October, it is time to plant your favorite cool season vegetables. Stop by the "Tiny Blue House" in front of the Master Gardener Training Garden (MGTG) for a 10-15 minute session to learn about starting your plants from seed. Explore the garden for inspiration and talk with Master Gardeners for gardening advice. • LAUHALA WEAVING WORKSHOP | 9:00 - 10:00 AM; 10:15 - 11:15 AM (free): Learn to weave a pinapple from lauhala leaves (see image below). • FRUIT ORCHARD TOUR | 10:00 - 11:00 AM (free, walk-up): Take a tour of the CARES Waiawa orchard with volunteers from the Fruit Hui to learn about tropical fruit trees. Sign up in-person at the fruit display table for 15 participants on a first come first serve basis. Participants must wear closed toe shoes as terrain is uneven. Suggested: drinking water, hat and sunscreen. • LEARN TO WORM WORKSHOP | 9:00 - 11:00 am (Registration & Fee Required): This hands-on workshop by Mindy Jaffe includes assembling your own worm kit, step by step, and instructions for maintaining a productive worm. The fee covers the ʻLearn to Wormʻ Kit, a basic box bin vermicomposting system. Included are a pre-drilled 10-gallon container, two bricks for elevation, plenty of cellulose bedding, a nice digital scale, custom-cut shadecloth bin blanket, and a robust 4-ounce starter colony of worms.
