Put the Beds to Bed

The Lincoln Parks and Recreation Public Garden Section created the event to involve residents in the joy of gardening at Sunken Gardens. Over the years, gardening groups, neighbors, Master Gardeners, 4-H groups and friends of Sunken Gardens have helped with the annual "Wake Up the Gardens" and "Put the Beds to Bed" events. WHAT TO WEAR/BRING Because the work will involve preparing the planting beds for winter. This work includes a variety of types of work like dumping buckets of compost into the beds and turning the soil/compost materials with a shovel. Participants should dress in work clothes, wear heavy-soled shoes and gloves and bring a shovel or spade. The mornings in early November can be chilly, so make sure to wear layers that could be removed if desired. HOW TO SIGN UP There is no limit to volunteers! The more the merrier. Participants are asked to register online at parks.lincoln.ne.gov/volunteer or by contacting [email protected]. SPECIAL NOTES The length of the project will depend on the number of participants so this event could likely end before noon. This volunteer activity is not recommended for children under the age of 13 due to the level of work with tools.  In case of inclement weather, Put the Beds to Bed will be postponed until the following Saturday in November.
