Full description from organizer

BURBANK, CA — Photographer Eric Renard presents a solo exhibition at the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center in Burbank through October 28, 2026. Featuring more than 45 black-and-white and color photographs, the exhibition brings together three distinct bodies of work that explore the expressive possibilities of photography beyond documentation. Through Los Angeles Overexposed, The Architecture of Light, and The Shape of Color, Renard examines the visual languages of place, light, and color, revealing the extraordinary within everyday environments. Together, the three series invite viewers to look beyond the surface of the familiar, discovering unexpected beauty, meaning, and wonder in both ordinary surroundings and far-flung places. Los Angeles Overexposed Born from the shifting landscapes of Los Angeles, a city where aspiration and reality continually intersect, Los Angeles Overexposed explores the layered, ever-changing nature of the urban environment through multiple exposures. Captured in iconic locations, each photograph combines fragments of time and place into intricate visual compositions. By layering exposures, Renard moves beyond the limitations of a single, static frame, creating images that exist somewhere between memory, perception, and imagination. Overlapping architectural forms and fragmented perspectives evoke the city's restless energy, complexity, and dreamlike allure, while reflecting the broader cultural landscape of California and beyond. The Architecture of Light In The Architecture of Light, Renard explores how light shapes our experience of the built environment. Working exclusively in black and white, he reduces the visual world to its essential elements—light, shadow, form, texture, and space—revealing compositions that often go unnoticed amid the pace of everyday life. Created in Paris, Los Angeles, Chicago, Salt Lake City, Stockholm, and Copenhagen, these photographs move beyond conventional depictions of place. Instead, they examine the fleeting intersections of sunlight, architecture, and human presence: a silhouette crossing a bright façade, the geometry of a staircase set against a Ferris wheel, shadows transforming the texture of a wall, or an elongated shadow stretching across the plaza at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). These moments become studies in visual structure rather than straightforward records of specific locations. Through subtle contrasts and carefully observed relationships, Renard invites viewers to slow down and consider the quiet choreography between the city and the light that defines it. The result is a meditation on light as a universal visual language—one with the power to reveal, conceal, simplify, and transform the familiar into something extraordinary. The Shape of Color The Shape of Color considers color not simply as a descriptive element, but as a subject in its own right. Rather than focusing on the documentation of places or objects, Renard's photographs explore how color defines space, evokes memory, and shapes perception. Each image reveals the extraordinary within the ordinary, allowing color to become structure, atmosphere, and emotion. Through unexpected relationships, visual rhythms, and subtle shifts in tone, the photographs encourage a more deliberate way of seeing, inviting viewers to experience color as the primary language of the image. Ultimately, The Shape of Color asks viewers to look beyond representation and discover the independent expressive power of color—the way it can transform an everyday observation into an evocative visual experience. An Invitation to See Differently Together, the three series offer complementary approaches to photographic expression. Through layered exposures, the interplay of light and shadow, and the expressive possibilities of color, Renard challenges the idea of photography as mere documentation. His images encourage a more attentive engagement with the visual world, uncovering the unexpected within familiar surroundings and inviting viewers to see their environments with renewed curiosity. The exhibition remains on view at the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center in Burbank through Wednesday , October 28, 2026. Closing Reception Friday, October 23, 2026 5:00–7:00 p.m. Visitors are invited to experience the exhibition and join the closing reception to celebrate Renard’s exploration of photography as a medium for interpretation, discovery, and visual expression.
