Full description from organizer

One of the most singular horror films of the ’70s—a hypnotic, haunting descent into unstable reality, creeping dread, and the supernatural. A KIND OF HUSH: Cinema of Ambient Dread October 9th-27th It’s in the air…a shadowy footstep behind a locked door, a stranger’s dead-eyed stare, a glimpsed figure at the edge of an empty lot, a whisper from the other room. Something felt before it is seen. Something not quite right. There’s an uneasy stillness that settles over a certain strain of horror, where the slightest sound, movement, or suggestion of a presence can become almost unbearable. This October, 7th House presents A KIND OF HUSH: Cinema of Ambient Dread, a six-film series devoted to movies that unsettle less through shocks than through atmosphere: quiet rooms, empty streets, unfamiliar landscapes, troubled dreams, and the uncanny feeling of being not quite alone… Spanning the ghostly memory palace of THE CHANGELING (1980), George A. Romero’s occult portrait of suburban disquiet SEASON OF THE WITCH (1972), the grief-haunted isolation of FULL CIRCLE (aka THE HAUNTING OF JULIA, 1977), the somnambulant seaside nightmare MESSIAH OF EVIL (1973), the rain-lashed Gothic fever dream of NEXT OF KIN (1982), and the hypnotic pastoral dread of LET’S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH (1971), these are films saturated in an atmosphere of gentle dread, where unease lingers long before frights are delivered. Join us throughout October for six singular excursions into the quieter reaches of horror, where silence draws us closer, shadows beckon, and the waking world slips into nightmare. For the finale of their October series A KIND OF HUSH: Cinema of Ambient Dread, 7th House is proud to present the new 4K restoration of John Hancock's LET’S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH (1971), one of the core films that first inspired the series and perhaps its purest distillation: a hypnotic rural nightmare where ghosts and vampirism drift eerily together in a woozy haze of unreliable reality. Recently released from a psychiatric institution, Jessica (Zohra Lampert, in an extraordinary performance) leaves New York City with her husband Duncan and their friend Woody in search of a quieter life in the country. Their destination is an old Connecticut farmhouse, where they discover a mysterious young drifter named Emily already living inside. They invite her to stay, but as Jessica begins hearing voices and glimpsing strange figures around the property, her hoped-for refuge incrementally gives way to a waking nightmare in which it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish between a return to psychological instability and a growing paranormal presence. Hancock draws us completely into Jessica’s unstable subjectivity, using whispered voices, disorienting images, and an atmosphere of almost preternatural stillness, punctuated by a spare, melancholy piano score, to make her uncertainty our own. Jessica knows that the people around her have learned to distrust her perceptions, and so has she; every inexplicable sight or sound carries with it the possibility that she is losing her grip again. Yet something about this sleepy corner of rural New England really does seem wrong. The old farmhouse, the lake, the empty country roads, even the taciturn townspeople take on an almost imperceptible supernatural menace, until the entire landscape seems suspended in a strange, somnambulant spell. Blurring the boundaries between ghost story, vampire film, zombie horror, and psychological nightmare, Let's Scare Jessica To Death filters familiar genre traditions through an unusually delicate and elusive sensibility, stripping them of their customary iconography until they feel mysterious again. Its terror arrives in whispers rather than screams, less concerned with the mechanics of the supernatural than with the feeling of sensing something impossible just beyond the limits of perception, where the boundaries between the world outside, the mind within, and the dark beyond begin to dissolve. Few horror films have so beautifully captured the peculiar dread of being surrounded by pastoral calm while feeling, with growing certainty, that something terrible is waiting just beneath its surface.
