Yet space isn't emptiness. It is what holds everything else together. The dark holds the light. The pot holds the water. The silence holds the note that comes after it. One of my teachers used to always tell us: "play more space." And it took me years to understand: space isn't a gap you fill. It's a sound of its own, and it can change the whole tune. There's the small kind of space, between two notes, between two people facing each other. And the vast kinds, like outer space, which we can’t even comprehend where it ends… Einstein taught us space and time were never separate, one fabric, bending around everything that moves through it. And sometimes, we just need some space, a space to process, a space to dance, a space to be together… From all the above, where do you feel space serves you the most? What would it feel like in your life to start “playing some space”? On Thursday, October 15th, ITAI 🎷 welcomes Amalgamy (Lubo) for a "Swanning" experience where instruments separated by geography and tradition find themselves sharing the same musical space, for the very first time. We call it "Sound Connections" as in - connection with others, with self, and with something bigger than all of us... Time to leap into the Swan Lake and dance the night away… ✨ ✨ Amalgamy Amalgamy is the music project of Bulgarian born musician Lubomir Smilenov. Born in Sofia and raised in New York City, Lubomir spent most of his life in NYC before moving to Los Angeles this year. His music draws from his Bulgarian roots, years in New York, and a long interest in traditional music from different parts of the world. Over the years, Lubomir has performed at Ragas Live Festival at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Golden Fest, Nublu, and Drom, among other venues and events around New York. For his performance at The Zula Den, Amalgamy will explore what happens when instruments separated by geography and tradition find themselves sharing the same musical space. ✨ ITAI 🎷🎹 Saxophonist and live-electronic artist; founder of The Residency. The Story of The Residency - Sound Connections: From ITAI: "After years of touring the world and playing on the biggest stages I could imagine, I started looking for something deeper. Indeed there is real magic in playing in front of big crowds, yet I was craving something, an ongoing connection, to root into my community, and for that, I knew I needed a consistent local experience, which is how The Residency was born. This new season of The Residency is about deepening our connection, as we grow as individuals and as a community. If the artists are the first swans, creating the spark together, this season is about the audience swanning as well, reflecting back at each other, and at the artists, in a beautiful swan lake of mirroring. Every Thursday, we'll feature one very special guest artist, sitting across from me as we create the soundtrack for the night from scratch. What is Swanning? Like two swans facing each other in a moment of deep connection, this allows us to share and respond, creating something raw, alive, and unrepeatable. In this format, the audience surrounds the face-to-face artists which forms a circle that makes everyone part of the experience.
