Stars and Make Believe: Doing Astrocartography Amidst Global Displacement

Join KL Mays and Alice Sparkly Kat in the PRS Library for a workshop about mapping out the places that you are attached to using star maps! Stars and make believe: doing astrocartography amidst global displacement with KL Mays and Alice Sparkly Kat In this workshop, we will research our own natal star maps and folklore associated with our angular stars, learn to read constellations by paran, and map out our stars in relation to other participants in a simple game of make believe. Today, fundamentalism reduces religion to the hyper-individual veneration of ancient texts and commodification reduces religion to speculative fictions about time and place. However, spirituality and divination is about holding memories and observing the living world together with other people. The technique of reading astrological charts by paran is the technique of studying the relational movements of the stars and planets. We will learn how to use parans to map the changing relationships in our lives with the goal of seeing what more is possible in those relationships. Tickets: $20 (in person only) Please note: Additional donations are encouraged to go towards The Sameer Project ABOUT THE PRESENTERS KL Mays is a memorykeeper and artist based in New York City. In their work, Mays seeks to repair our relationships with this haunted, hypersettled territory. Mays also leads walking tours, using research on geology, social history, infrastructure, ecology, and spirit to uncover events that have happened in a specific place. weliveinaplace.straw.page Alice Sparkly Kat is an astrologer and the author of Postcolonial Astrology: Reading the Planets through Capital, Power, and Labor (2021).
