George C. Scott stars in one of cinema’s greatest ghost stories, a haunting tale of grief, memory, and a presence that won’t stay silent. A KIND OF HUSH: Cinema of Ambient Dread October 9th-27th It’s in the air…a shadowy footstep behind a locked door, a stranger’s dead-eyed stare, a glimpsed figure at the edge of an empty lot, a whisper from the other room. Something felt before it is seen. Something not quite right. There’s an uneasy stillness that settles over a certain strain of horror, where the slightest sound, movement, or suggestion of a presence can become almost unbearable. This October, 7th House presents A KIND OF HUSH: Cinema of Ambient Dread, a six-film series devoted to movies that unsettle less through shocks than through atmosphere: quiet rooms, empty streets, unfamiliar landscapes, troubled dreams, and the uncanny feeling of being not quite alone… Spanning the ghostly memory palace of THE CHANGELING (1980), George A. Romero’s occult portrait of suburban disquiet SEASON OF THE WITCH (1972), the grief-haunted isolation of FULL CIRCLE (aka THE HAUNTING OF JULIA, 1977), the somnambulant seaside nightmare MESSIAH OF EVIL (1973), the rain-lashed Gothic fever dream of NEXT OF KIN (1982), and the hypnotic pastoral dread of LET’S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH (1971), these are films saturated in an atmosphere of gentle dread, where unease lingers long before frights are delivered. Join us throughout October for six singular excursions into the quieter reaches of horror, where silence draws us closer, shadows beckon, and the waking world slips into nightmare. For opening night of their October series A KIND OF HUSH: Cinema of Ambient Dread, 7th House is proud to present Peter Medak’s THE CHANGELING (1980), an exquisitely crafted ghost story in which a cavernous old house, a terrible loss, and the faintest sounds from somewhere beyond the living world gradually converge in one of the great—and most melancholically haunting—horror films of its era, widely regarded as one of the greatest ghost stories ever filmed and named by Martin Scorsese as one of the scariest movies of all time. George C. Scott gives one of his great performances as John Russell, a celebrated composer struggling to rebuild his life after the sudden deaths of his wife and daughter. Leaving New York for Seattle, he retreats to a vast, long-unoccupied mansion where he hopes to find the solitude necessary to work. But the silence of the house soon begins to reveal itself as something else: inexplicable noises echo through empty rooms, doors creak open and slam shut, and Russell begins to sense that someone else is there—someone who never left. Working with remarkable patience and restraint, Medak makes the house itself an instrument of dread. Long corridors, high ceilings, shadowed staircases, and rooms seemingly suspended in time become charged with unseen presence, while the film’s extraordinary sound design—all the more chillingly affecting in a theater—turns knocks, whispers, footsteps, and the reverberations within vacant space into sources of almost unbearable tension. Medak understands how little it takes to disturb such stillness, allowing the smallest movement or broken silence to assume an almost terrifying weight. Presented here in a gorgeous 4k restoration, The Changeling is both a beautifully classical haunted-house film and something mysterious and melancholy, finding an ideal center in Scott, whose usual formidable presence gives way to remarkable tenderness and interiority. Its horror gathers slowly from the lingering traces of lives interrupted, until haunting becomes inseparable from memory and the persistence of the lost in the lives left behind. At once deeply moving and truly frightening, it remains a ghost story of uncommon power, one that makes the distance between the living and the dead feel unnervingly thin. Dir.
