Cannon Class Lathes 101 is a 4 class series.

Learn to operate the 16" Swing Southbend and and a late model 70"s Hardinge Chucker Lathe. Machine a cannon that you can complete to make it functional as a noise maker. The cannon is the project but learning how to use the lathe is the goal. Skills that last a lifetime. 1st Class: October 17th Saturday. Lathe operation and best practices taught using NIMS training book. Learn hands on the Southbend lathe & Hardinge lathes to make a ring. Learn all the functions face, turn, drill, and bore, and setups. Machine a few different materials too such as, brass, alumimum, steel, and plastic. Ring will be your choice, if brass, we can nickle plate it too. 2nd Class: October 24th Saturday. Learn how to use micrometers, vernier calipers, inside mics, dial bore guage to make accurate repeatable measurements and basic print reading. Machining is to atain precision results, this is important to the process. 3rd October 31st Saturday & November 1st Sunday. Class Cannon machining, this class is broken up to two students at a time, using both Saturday and Sunday. Two students are so observing the proces is part of learning, each of you will take turns machining your cannon to meet the print specifications to bring your cannon to completion. 4th Class: November 7th Saturday. Trunnion, the mount for holding the cannon. this casted brass trunion will be provided. You will machine the trunnion to fit precisly your cannon utilizing precison meansurements. You can 3D print your carriage anytime at the Makerspace, or at home if you have your own 3D printer. Files are available. • The goal is safe and accurate Lathe Operation, the cannon is the project.
