Learn to fly fish in this intro class! Students will learn about gear, fly selection, casting techniques, knots, and how to read water. Do you have an interest in fly fishing but don't know where to start? This is the class for you! This foundational class will set you up with everything you need to know to get started on your own fly fishing journey. Students will learn about rod and line selection for what type of water and species of fish they would like to go after. We will also cover different types of flies, knots, and other needed gear you will need for a successful day on the water. As a group, we will learn how to cast in different situations and scenarios. The second half of class allows students to get out on the river and try to catch a fish! Possible fish species include rainbow trout, brook trout, brown trout, largemouth & smallmouth bass, pickerel, and fall fish. Although catching a fish is never guaranteed, students have had high success in former classes. All rods, lines, reels, and flies are available for rent, free of charge. You are highly encouraged to bring your own gear if you have it. Waterproof boots or waiters are highly encouraged as well. SKILLS COVERED: • Rod, Reel, and Line Selection/Setup. • Knot Tying. • Fly Classification and Selection. • Necessary Knots. • How to "Read" Water to Find Fish. • Basic Casting Techniques. • Advanced Casting Techniques. • Hook Setting and Fish Landing/Release. • Fish Cleaning (if relevant). REQUIRED GEAR: • Massachusetts Fishing License (All Students must have a license, required by law). • Fly Rod, Reel, Line, and Flies (Available to rent and share, not necessary to buy beforehand). • Ghost Net, Foreceps, Waiters (Not necessary, but helpful). • Water, snacks, and appropriate clothing for weather and bugs. • Notebook and Pen. Students will be sent home with a hand picked selection of flies to start on their fishing journey. This class is geared for adults, however mature minors are welcome to join. We do not set an age minimum but rather set a maturity standard. It is up to the parents to decide if they feel their child or teen is mature enough for this class. All students are expected to maintain a level of respect for all students and carry themselves as individuals. If you feel your child will be interruptive to the flow of class, or hinder your independent learning, this class will not be for them and we encourage you to look at our children's survival classes, which are specifically structured for kids. Students below the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The ticket price covers the cost of 1 student, regardless of age. Maximum 5 students per class. This class runs rain or shine, unless weather makes fishing conditions unsafe, Please be adequately dressed for the weather. This class will be taught by Tim Swanson, founder and lead instructor of Owl Eyes Wilderness Survival. Tim has 25 years of fly fishing experience and has fished in various states across USA for a wide variety of fish species. For more information on Tim's background and experience, please click HERE.
