No Vacancy: Yanira Collado, Converging Timelines/Woven Silhouettes

Hotels historically operate as experimental vectors for cultural influence. Converging Timelines/Woven Silhouettes embeds a site-responsive intervention within that physical framework to engage a transient, universal audience with local and global underrecognized narratives. Rather than treating historic patterns as mere ornamentation, the work elevates regional geometric motifs as vital visual languages of heritage. By framing these hidden markers within a contemporary space, the installation anchors the ephemeral hospitality experience in the rooted identity of its geographic location. Utilizing upcycled paper, wood and textiles, the project leverages salvaged media as physical repositories of obscured cultural and economic histories. Through a conceptual, layered visual timeline, Converging Timelines/Woven Silhouettes recontextualizes heritage, translating architectural silhouettes and material toponymy into a rigorous spatial dialogue that recovers these underrepresented trajectories from historical erasure. Yanira Collado (b. Brooklyn, New York,1975) is a multimedia artist working with site-specific installations that encompass painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and audio. Collado's practice considers concepts that allude to the restoration and reconciliation of histories. Art Residencies and fellowships include the Mississippi Museum of Art, Residency, Jackson Mississippi, 2023-2024, Art Pace Artist Residency, San Antonio, Texas, 2022 and the Joan Mitchell Art Residency, New Orleans 2023. In 2025 Collado was granted a Latinx Fellowship. In 2024 Collado placed best in show at the Orlando’s Museum of Art Florida survey, Florida Prize and in 2022 she was awarded an emergency grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts to support her exhibition Areito: Allusions of Sacred Geometry and Diaspora.
